Typhoon Ondoy Victims

Organized by The Bayanihan Spirit

UPDATE: So where will the funds go?
We are partnering up with The Women of Ateneo (TWA)http://www.thewomenofateneo.org/ in the Philippines. This is an all women alumni group from Ateneo de Manila University. TWA is working closely with the University to help Flood Victims in the Philippines. Depending on how much money we are able to raise the funds will go directly to existing efforts to help Ondoy Victims which includes relief and rehabilitation.

We know most of the people from TWA and we trust that they will do a good job with the funds. Also, Ateneo is located near the places where the flood hit the worse which is in the Markina and Rizal area.

Here is what Ateneo has done so far:

September 26, 2009 brought in one of the most deadliest tropical storms in Philippine History. Ondoy or Ketsana managed to submerge 80% of Manila and the nearby province of Rizal.

The aftermath: more than 450,000 were affected by the floods, with more than 150,000 seeking refuge in 207 evacuation centers and other people's homes. Ondoy dropped about 411 millimeters (16 inches) on northern Manila, exceeding the one-day record of 331 millimeters in 1967.

Clean water, food, cooking gas and medicines are difficult to find and citizens are in danger of water-borne diseases. With another tropical storm predicted to hit the Philippines by October 2 the nation needs as much help as soon as possible. At this point, the Philippine government is overwhelmed so it is up to us to mobilize and contribute to the massive relief operations.

The Bayanihan Spirit is now taking donations for the victims of Typhoon Ondoy. We urge everyone to act generously to help Filipinos in need. Let the real Bayanihan Spirit- the spirit of community- live on not just in the Philippines but in the Global Community!

What is Bayanihan?
Wikipedia describes Bayanihan as a Filipino term taken from the word bayan, referring to a nation, town or community. The whole term bayanihan refers to a spirit of communal unity or effort to achieve a particular objective. It can be traced from a common tradition in Philippine townswhere community members volunteer to help a family move to a new place. The process involves literally carrying the house to its new location. This is done by putting bamboo poles forming a strong frame to lift thestilts from theground and carrying the whole house with the menpositioned at the ends of each pole.
